A concerned citizen living in the Santa Cruz mountains of Watsonville, CA, called animal control to report that two piglets had been running loose on her road for a week. It was clear the two piglets had escaped from a factory farm (as evidenced by their severed tails and the notches in their ears), and managed to survived alone in the mountains for three weeks before they were able to be caught and saved. The friendly piglets were brought to the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter, who had a small barn and no real space to care for these girls. Our founders were at the shelter to rescue a duck, and met Spuds and Sweet Pea.
Tragically, we lost our precious Sweet Pea in 2021 due to an unknown cause. Not even our vet friends at UC Davis could figure out what happened. Unfortunately, as production pigs these breeds often have a number of medical issues that shorten their natural lifespan drastically. But Spuds immediately bonded with Ziggy, our first rescue in New York, and the two of them have been inseparable ever since - healing their hearts together.
