The hen crew is made up of a beautiful array of both common and rare heritage breeds, popular in backyard chicken-keeping, as well as a few ladies who came from commercial backgrounds. Many of these ladies were surrendered and/or abandoned as they were considered "spent" when their egg-laying slowed, and were slated for slaughter. Now safe here at Sweet Farm, on any given day you will find them hard at work eating bugs and taking dust baths. Seeing their diversity, in both colors and personalities, makes the chicken yard a relaxing and enjoyable place.

Each member of the 50+ hen crew has a name, a personality, friends, likes, and dislikes. The team at Sweet Farm makes sure they have plenty of space to run and play. They have heated stalls in the winter, and predator protection in the form of many roosters, high fences, and lots of places to shelter, and all are closed up safe in our bird barn at night. They get plenty of organic food with dietary supplements and treats to keep them healthy and ensure they feel loved. These are all part of a baseline standard of care that all animals need and deserve...especially delicate chickens!
